Halo-halo is a popular Filipino dessert that is high in sugar and carbohydrates. The name comes from the Tagalog phrase “halo-halo,” which means “mix-mix.”

It typically contains a combination of:

  • Shaved ice
  • Evaporated or condensed milk
  • Sweetened beans
  • Jackfruit
  • Coconut strips (macapuno)
  • Sweetened plantains (saba)
  • Nata de coco
  • Tapioca pearls
  • Leche flan
  • Ube (purple yam) halaya
  • A scoop of ube or other ice cream

The ingredients are layered in a tall glass, then mixed together before eating.
